“From the Ashes” 2017 Presented by National Geographic "From the Ashes” puts a human face on those whose lives have been impacted by the coal industry in America. It goes from Appalachia to the West's Powder River Basin, beyond the rhetoric of the "war on coal", to present compelling and often heart-breaking stories about what's at stake for our economy, health, and climate. This well-crafted, fact-driven and compelling documentary, directed by Michael Bonfiglio, discusses all sides of the debate. This film screening comes as Xcel Energy and the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) consider retiring Comanche Coal Units 1 & 2 here in Pueblo. There are many questions and concerns to consider when the coal industry closes a local facility. “From the Ashes” addresses those questions in communities facing similar transitions across the country. Anna McDevitt, a Beyond Coal organizer with the Sierra Club, will lead a discussion following the film to explore the community impacts of coal in Pueblo, and how the public can engage in the PUC's decision-making process this fall. Please feel free to come with questions and concerns.
